The Waterloo battlefield is colorfully and accurately depicted. The game
supports several zoom levels allowing you to get a close up view of the action
or to take in the battle as a whole. It is at the zoom extremes that you'll take
the most notice of the graphics. At the lowest zoom level, you can take in a
large portion of the battlefield, but you do so at a cost to the clarity of the
graphics. The objects and units on the battlefield become somewhat chunky and
ill-defined. At the other extreme, it's an entirely different story. The game
depicts over sixty different uniforms and at the closest zoom level the color
and level of detail is quite good. However, since it is hard to run a battle at
either of these zoom extremes, you'll find yourself playing the game in the
mid-zoom range, where the graphics are nice, if not cutting edge.
Waterloo is very playable - after playing through all of the tutorial
scenarios provided you will be able to play in earnest, worrying more about your
strategies than about how to issue commands.
The game's AI is quite good and provides strong competition at its higher
levels. Four different difficulty settings should help players new to war gaming
to get their feet wet, though.
The game does have a few quirks, though. It is unclear as to how the game
determines ownership of an objective - pouring troops onto the objective does
not always immediately switch it to the opposition's possession. This
seems to occur when capturing objectives from the enemy, it did not occur when
capturing neutral objectives. Also, the game did occasionally perform a bit
sluggishly, especially when scrolling around large battle areas. This did not
occur all the time, though, so was more of an occasional inconvenience than an
annoyance.
In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated: 82%.
A good game for anyone with any interest in replaying Napoleon's most infamous
battle. War gamers and strategy gamers interested in historical battles will
find it well worth their time to give Waterloo a try.
