The War of 1812 can be played in two modes, a top-down 2D mode and a 3/4
perspective 3D mode. The 2D mode will provide a familiar look to veteran
wargamers since it resembles square die-cut counters on a mapboard. The 3D view
resembles playing the game with miniatures and looks nice enough, but don't
expect cutting edge graphics. However, they do just fine for a wargame, where
the gameplay itself should take precedence over fancy graphics.
While the game does not come with a manual, it does have extensive online
documentation. The documentation not only explains gameplay, but also
provides a lot of the designer's notes and explanations of the tactics employed
by commanders during this time period. While reading these notes the level
of detail incorporated into the game becomes apparent.
The interface is well-designed and it is easy to quickly get the hang of
playing the game. Mastering it is another matter, though, as the AI is
challenging and players must really learn to use the tactics of the day if they
want to have a reasonable chance at victory. Veteran wargamers will enjoy
the chance to try their hand at a rarely covered war, while those new to
wargames will be able to soon grasp the basics of gameplay without too much
trouble.
In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated: 85%.
Those who enjoy wargames and have an interest in a period of American history
not often covered by wargames will definitely enjoy this nicely designed game.
