Tobruk 41 is the fourth installment in John Tiller's Panzer Campaigns series
of games. It covers the epic battles between the German Afrika Korps and
the troops of the British Commonwealth, including the famous British Eighth
Army.
Basic gameplay models that of the earlier games in the series - a
computer version of hex-based wargames, with units at the battalion, company,
and platoon level and turns of two hours each. The game runs as a Windows
application, giving the player a completely mouse-driven environment.
Units move and attack via mouse clicks, with more complicated orders issued via
a row of toolbar buttons at the top of the screen.
Desert warfare in North Africa presents a different situation than that found
on the European continent. Many battlefields will be devoid of any terrain
beyond vast stretches of desert, giving armies plenty of room to maneuver and
making mobility absolutely critical. Keeping these fast moving units in
supply is also an issue, and Tobruk 41 introduces supply dumps and units to
model this need in the game. Race too far ahead of your supply units and
you may find your enemy sneaking around you and eliminating your supply sources.
The game ships with a huge library of over fifty scenarios, so you're bound
to find some agreeable battles to fight. If not, then the game comes with
a scenario editor which will allow you to design your own. Victory is
measured by the casualties inflicted on the enemy and the capture and control of
key battlefield objectives.
