Kohan's graphics are for the most part of good quality. The designers
of Kohan packed each unit with plenty of frames of animation, so the units'
movements are fluid and look great. The game maps are rich and colorful, and
come alive with little animations. One complaint, though, is that the character
portraits are all static. Adding animation to the portraits, especially those
used during the briefing and narrative screens, would go a long way towards
enhancing the game's mood and drawing the player into Kohan's world.
One of Kohan's disappointments is in the quality of the voiceovers. The
narrations sound muffled and the voice acting at times leaves something to be
desired. This is particularly curious since the in-game sound effects are of
good quality.
Kohan is one of those games that you'll really enjoy playing. Why? It's
a lot of fun - the inclusion of concepts such as supply, formations, and
entrenchment into the game make it stand apart from the RTS crowd. Sure the
subject matter is fantasy, but it adds more of a realistic feel to the game -
and provides more of a challenge.
The game's campaign is well-designed and compelling. The storyline is
interesting and reveals itself nicely in step with the player's actions in each
of the levels. It is also a nice touch that the player can find additional Kohan
or new technologies in ruins and lairs, and that these things can be carried
with the player through the rest of the campaign. It's an added bonus for
players that thoroughly explore their surroundings and concentrate on more than
just the required objectives.
It should also be mentioned that Kohan has a very easy to use interface and
that it is thoroughly explained by the game's extensive tutorials. There is a
wealth of information and a large degree of control provided to the player, and
it is all very easily accessible.
One thing disappointing about the game maps, though, is that they do not have
enough special encounter or resource sites. It can be imagined that the
designers kept the number of resources low to de-emphasize their importance to a
kingdom's economy. However, it would have preferable that the city's resource
centers would have been a bit less efficient and that the player would have been
required to seek out more special resource sites. Also, the inclusion of more
special encounter sites - ruins, spires, dragons, etc. - would have helped to
make Khaldun a richer and more engrossing land.
In The End, This Game Hath Been Rated: 89%.
Kohan took a chance by applying some new ideas to real-time strategy and it's
gamers who will reap the rewards. Strategy gamers will find that Kohan's
challenging and thoroughly enjoyable gameplay will make it a welcome addition to
their gaming library.
