Before beginning your course, it is important to understand the factors that affect a golfer's enjoyment of a hole.  Aesthetics, challenge, and skill are the three most important aspects of a hole, and variety is vital to your course as a whole.

Aesthetics

Golfers play your course as an escape from the boring aspects of their everyday lives.  Help them to accomplish this by providing them with an idyllic setting in which to play golf.  Don't be stingy with the scenic trees and flowers.  Place monuments whenever you can.  If golfers are having a tough time with a particular hole, add a sundial or a grove of scenic trees nearby.  Their frustration will quickly subside as they take in the calming scenery, distracted from their thoughts of tossing their clubs into the nearest lake...
