Impossible Creatures is a very innovative strategy game. Your 'units' are mutant creatures
which you create yourself by 'combining' different animals. The game includes
over 50 different animals of all types - gorillas, sharks, eagles, dragonflies,
bats... Two of these animals are taken at a time and combined in different ways.
For example, you may want to place the head and tail of a great white shark onto
the body of a gorilla. Each combination yields a different mutant animal with
unique characteristics. In fact, the game will make possible over 200,000
different creatures! Gone are the days when you can send simply send the proper
counter units against the units with which your enemy is attacking. The sheer
number of possible creatures will give Impossible Creatures a high degree of replayability and
will enable the game to keep surprising veteran players.
The game will feature unique defensive items such as bramble fences and sonic
towers. Of course, how well these work will depend on the type of creatures they
are defending against.
Impossible Creatures takes place in a detailed, fully 3D world which includes weather, time
of day effects, and complete flora and fauna unique to four different ecologies.
The ecologies also affect the performance of your creatures - they tend to do
better in their preferred environments.
Impossible Creatures will ship with a campaign game that will require the player to battle
an evil madman across 14 distinct islands. Multiplayer games will allow players
to transfer the mutant units that they created during the single player game.
All of the game's development tools, APIs, and scripting languages will be
released to the public when the game is launched. This will allow players to add
even more animals to the game, resulting in exponentially higher numbers of
possible creatures.
Impossible Creatures is being developed by Relic (of Homeworld fame) and will be released
early 2002.
