Commandos meets Star Trek in the new game Star Trek Away Team. You must lead Starfleet's top covert operations group through 18 missions which take you on a tour of many of the more famous locations from the Star Trek: The Next Generation universe. Does this make for a fun game, or something only a die-hard Trekker would love?

The game unfolds as if you are taking part in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. You command an elite force of Starfleet operatives assigned to investigate the source of a conspiracy which is sweeping the highest levels of the Federation and the Klingon Empire. Your team will need to follow the conspiracy as it unwinds and leads you from Starfleet Headquarters to the Klingon homeworld, inside a Borg cube, and to more locales from the Star Trek universe. To accomplish your task, at each location you select three to six covert operatives from your crew of 17 to comprise an away team and beam into the thick of things. Each mission will have both major and secondary objectives to be accomplished - some you'll know about at the beginning of the mission, others will be revealed as the story unfolds.

Not all missions can be accomplished with brute force - some will require you to rely on stealth instead. Guards will react to your presence if they see or hear your party and will run to investigate any dead bodies you carelessly leave lying about, so you'll need to creep quietly around them, use Vulcan neck pinches to incapacitate guards, or use an engineer to disable security systems. The game uses a couple of interesting features to help you out on the stealth missions - vision fields and sound cones. The vision fields allow you to see the field of vision of guards and security cameras helping you to stay out of site. When enabled, the sound cones reflect the amount of noise coming from your party. If a guard crosses into your sound cone, he'll be alerted to your presence. Your actions affect the size of your sound cones - running and shooting are good ways to make them grow.

If you fail to meet an objective or lose a crew member, the mission ends in failure and you'll have to restart it. Once you've completed the mission's objectives, you are taken to a debriefing screen which advances the game's storyline and sets the stage for your next mission.
