Homeworld gives you a good degree of control over your fleets by allowing you to specify the formation they will use while attacking. Selecting the wrong formation can mean an ineffective attack or, even worse, a battle lost. On the other hand, knowing the best formation to use in a particular situation can give you a definite tactical edge. The available formations are listed below, along with advice on when to use each one.

The Delta

The Delta is a flat, two-dimensional formation. It is not a very good attack formation as it disperses your fleet's firepower. Use the Delta to spread your ships out for easy selection when organizing them for separate strike forces, but avoid using it during hostilities.

The Broad

Like the Delta, another two-dimensional formation. It suffers from the same dispersion of firepower problem as the Delta. The Broad is best used when preparing to break off groups of ships to attack different targets.
