"This is for playing against the computer/ really stupid players:

Just a little introduction: This is a defensive strategy against any non-ranged unit. This strategy was not tried out in Age of Empires 2 but it was used successfully in Age of Mythology.

The trick is to build walls with gaps in them.
Lets say you want to build a defence between a cliff and some trees. Build a wall from the cliff ALMOST to the trees, leaving just a little gap between the wall and the trees to let units in. Behind that wall, build another one, this time from the trees ALMOST to the cliff (the other way) leaving a gap between the wall and the cliff. Maybe add another wall in the same pattern.

What will happen is, when the computer tries to attack you, it will see that there is a direct way through your walls, but it will not see that it needs to move in this zig-zag motion through them. So basically, put a few defensive towers behind the walls and you'll be able to hold off (if not decimate) a mini army.

In addition to the walls, add gates in the middle of each wall so that your troops are not slowed down by it, and place some heavy cavalry units behind the walls to counter any ranged units that think they're smart.

The bonus of this strategy is that you get an effective defense that doesn't need much maintaining. The computer will rarely attack will walls, preferring to walk though them (because they can) instead. (and getting killed in the process)

Once, I accidentally left my game UN-PAUSED to go eat dinner. My walls protected me for a full 2 hours. (before I got back to the game finding that I had thousands of each resource)" - Tian
