Two orphaned twins, Eliot and Fiona, raised by their strict and callous grandmother, have their world turned inside out on their 15th birthday when they begin to learn that they are anything but ordinary, geeky, shy teenagers. They are caught in a tug-of-war between their mother's family, the Immortals, and their fathers', the Infernals.

The twins' existence threatens the balance that prevents the two families from killing each other, so both sides set out to test the twins to see to which family they belong, and if the twins will even be allowed to live. The Immortals test the twins openly with three heroic trials, while the Infernals test the twins secretly with three diabolical temptations.

Through all the trials, the twins struggle with how to hold onto their identity, while not allowing either side of their family turn them into something they don't want to be. For the twins, it's about living the way they want to live.

Mortal Coils is the first book in what promises to be a page-turning epic series. Eric Nylund has successfully created a cast of characters with depth and personality that elicit emotional responses from his readers.
