The Gamers' Temple 2002 Games of the Year - Xbox

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell

Splinter Cell is not the first stealth-based action game, but it will be the game that future entries in the genre will be judged against for some time to come.

Part of Splinter Cell's appeal is its tense, real-world, and ultimately believable story.  As a highly-trained special forces operative, you must uncover and ultimately stop an insidious terrorist plot that could lead to a global scale conflict.  And it's just you.  There is no team and no back-up.  If you get caught your own country will disavow all knowledge of you and your operation.  Good thing you have a wide variety of moves and high-tech gadgets at your disposal to help you avoid detection.  And once you complete this long and challenging game, you can download additional levels via an Xbox Live account.

Not only does the game play great, it looks great as well.  This game pushes the Xbox hardware to the max, making the console truly live up to its potential.  The lighting effects and material physics are incredible, and the animations are smooth and life-like.  It all serves to make Splinter Cell an immersive and thoroughly enjoyable gaming experience.
