The
'fleet' in 2XL Fleet Defense is a single aircraft carrier that sits in the
middle of the play area. Your job is to keep the carrier afloat during an
onslaught of attacks by fighters, bombers, and ships, and your tool to do that
is a single F-35 fighter. Tap on a radar icon and you'll be taken to an
overhead view of the battlefield in which red blips represent approaching
attackers. You can jump right to the attackers by tapping on the radar,
and by tapping on an enemy your fighter will move to intercept and then fire a
missile when it gets into range. Let an attacker get too close, and it
will fire a missile or torpedo at your carrier. If your carrier takes too
much damage, it sinks and your game is over. You can repair your carrier
by landing your fighter on it, but you'll need to be careful to do that between
waves or you'll leave your carrier defenseless and the repairs will be
short-lived. Your carrier is not entirely defenseless, though, it's
equipped with a Phalanx defense system that sprays deadly defensive fire in all
directions, but to enable this weapon you need to charge it up by destroying
enemies.
The basics of the game are pretty, well, basic, but it will take some
strategy to do well in the game. The various enemy weapons travel at
different speeds and since your attackers come from 360 degrees, you'll need to
be smart about which ones you target first. Also, your plane can't turn on
a dime; it has to make sweeping turns just like a real plane. If you don't
select the next target carefully, you can lose valuable time as your fighter has
to maneuver into position to fire its next missile.
In addition to giving you a score each time you play, the game has a ranking
system based on your total points with the game and also has a number of
achievements to unlock - most of which will require multiple games to achieve.
Rounding out the scoring package are leaderboards that let you compare your
skill to those of other gamers.
2XL Fleet Defense is on the surface a simple point-to-fire shooter, but the
game's tactical element and its rapidly increasing difficulty make it exciting
to play - and the achievement system is a nice reward system for your efforts.
It will give you some nice shooting action that will provide you with some fun
mobile entertainment that you'll keeping come back to for more.
